Summary of the research

Overall conclusion

Andrew Glasgow's testament directly identifies his wife as Elizat Stevinsoun and their son as Robert Glasgow. It also names his daughters Marion, Janet and Isobel. A clause for a child with whom Elizat might then be pregnant is conditional only and does not prove that another child was born.

The testament was made on 6 February 1597 as written (1597/8), says Andrew died on 7 February, and was confirmed on 10 July 1598. WikiTree now correctly uses 7 February 1598 as the death date; its former 10 July date was the confirmation date.

This reading supersedes the former identification of Jonet Anderson as Andrew's wife and James, Andrew and William as named children. The former Andrew profile Glasgow-4006 was corrected to the record-defined son Robert on 18 September 2026; Glasgow-4007 redirects to it. Its name, Andrew father link and Elizat mother link are recorded in the maintained Robert account and were checked again in the 30 September live profile audit. The older prohibition on using those IDs belongs to the superseded misreading, not the current Robert identity.

Andrew's father remains unproved. John Glasgow, a burgess of Glasgow, is chronologically possible, but no record found calls Andrew his son or bridges the Glasgow-burgh family to Andrew's rural Calder household.

Source findingsCaldercleir source-access review — 28 September 2026

The NRS Morton papers catalogue identifies GD150/696–757 as Caldercleir barony material (1506–1824) and GD150/320–493 as general charters/deeds (1551–1597). No public item-level image or occupier succession transcript naming Andrew, Elizat Stevinsoun or their son Robert was found. The original testament remains the direct evidence for Andrew's children; the estate series is a pending archival route to his own father and the children's later identities. Lack of a name-level catalogue hit is not evidence that the family is absent from the manuscripts.

From the maintained transcription of NRS Edinburgh Commissary Court CC8/8/32, image 123 (research/transcriptions/originals-2026-09-09/andrew-1598.json, reviewed 27 September 2026); many names, places and amounts are illegible or queried:

Adviser: the latter will names advisers whose counsel Elizat and Robert were to use, including James Stevinsoun (the draft spells it Stevisoun). The shared surname makes him a possible lead for Elizat Stevinsoun's family; the will states no relationship.
Owed to Andrew: John Mure; Isobell [surname illegible], widow of the late John [surname illegible]; James Stevinsoun, about £10.
Owed by Andrew: [name illegible] in Corsoun[?]; Johne Keddell[?], for a brown horse; James [surname illegible]; David Lyoun; Patrik Stevinsoun[?]; the laird of Westhall[?]. These are economic associates, not proved kin.
Inventory: three cows with their calves at £8[?] each (£24[?]); two young beasts a year old; two horses at £10[?] each (£20[?]); nine sheep; eight bolls of oats at about four merks[?] a boll; barley (quantity illegible); household utensils, furnishings and clothing. Several values and the totals are unread and should not be filled in by calculation.

The earlier draft also reads a Johne Sandelandis in the confirmation and a closing clause in which a notary signed for Andrew because he could not write; the maintained transcription leaves that closing formula partly unresolved.

Identity and family

Parentage candidate: John Glasgow-3181 — not matched

A higher-resolution re-reading of NRS Edinburgh Commissary Court CC8/8/5 names a lawful child of John Glasgow of Hirmenschelis whose forename is provisionally read Androw/Andrew. Glasgow-3163 was compared because his name, generation and broad rural Lothian setting fit. The evidence does not identify them as one man: John's record does not carry the child into Corsoun/Calder Cleir, and Andrew's 1597/8 testament does not name his father. Glasgow-3163 is therefore excluded as the present profile match, without claiming the men could never be joined by later property, rental, kirk or court evidence. A distinct, forename-uncertain creation draft now represents the 1577 child.

Do not detach the current spouse merely to leave Andrew without an evidenced replacement. Treat the Jonet Anderson attachment as contradicted and temporary until a verified Elizabeth profile is ready. The four directly documented children were documented separately. Jonet's and Isobel's record-defined profiles have since been merged into the leading compatible Mid Calder and Edinburgh identities, respectively. Jonet’s direct testament father relationship is now confident; Isobel’s live father status remains uncertain. Both later-life identity attributions remain probable, as described in their current findings.

The land-use clause is unusually valuable because it establishes succession within Andrew's own household: Elizat was to retain the land until Robert came of age. It does not establish who Andrew inherited from, whether the holding was heritable or tenanted, or a relationship to the burgh Glasgows.

Contemporary rural surname-bearers include John Glasgow of Hirmenschelis and Margaret Glasgow of Croftmalloch. Their nearby testamentary appearances make them useful cluster candidates, not proved siblings.

The best unresolved record series is the National Records of Scotland, GD150/696–757, Barony of Caldercleir, and GD150/2027–2060, Midlothian rentals, supplemented by GD150/320–493. A rental, tack or transfer naming Robert as Andrew's successor would both identify the land and potentially distinguish him from the live Robert candidates.

The retained Robert and Marion creation drafts were stale: these testament-defined children already have Glasgow-4006 and Glasgow-4095. Retire those creation recommendations and link their existing accounts. The later adult identification of Robert with Glasgow-1156 remains a compatible possibility, not an exclusion based only on an absent property bridge. Do not merge the profiles without comparing their respective record identities. The original Robert parentage and Marion father conclusion were already documented; this queue correction is not a newly certain relationship.

Do not detach the current spouse merely to leave Andrew without an evidenced
replacement. Treat the Jonet Anderson attachment as contradicted and temporary
until a verified Elizabeth profile is ready. The four directly documented
children were documented separately. Jonet's and Isobel's record-defined
profiles have since been merged into the leading compatible Mid Calder and
Edinburgh identities, respectively. Jonet’s direct testament father relationship is
now confident; Isobel’s live father status remains uncertain. Both later-life
identity attributions remain probable, as described in their current findings.

Wider rural context

The testament places Andrew in a rural Calder estate setting, not in the
Glasgow burgh household. The land-use clause is unusually valuable because it
establishes succession **within Andrew's own household**: Elizat was to retain
the land until Robert came of age. It does not establish who Andrew inherited
from, whether the holding was heritable or tenanted, or a relationship to the
burgh Glasgows.

Contemporary rural surname-bearers include [[Glasgow-3181|John Glasgow of
Hirmenschelis]] and [[Glasgow-3613|Margaret Glasgow of Croftmalloch]]. Their
nearby testamentary appearances make them useful cluster candidates, not proved
siblings.

The best unresolved record series is the National Records of Scotland,
**GD150/696–757**, Barony of Caldercleir, and **GD150/2027–2060**, Midlothian
rentals, supplemented by **GD150/320–493**. A rental, tack or transfer naming
Robert as Andrew's successor would both identify the land and potentially
distinguish him from the live Robert candidates.

The [Findmypast transcript](https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=SCOT%2FWILLS%2F057425&tab=this)
identifies Andrew Glasgow in Corsoun/Corstoun, parish of Calder-Cleir, with date
10 July 1598. It is a derivative index to the same testament and supplies the
confirmation date, not Andrew's death date or independent family evidence.

Source findings

### Caldercleir source-access review — 28 September 2026

The [NRS Morton papers catalogue](https://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/details.aspx?reference=GD150) identifies GD150/696–757 as Caldercleir barony material (1506–1824) and GD150/320–493 as general charters/deeds (1551–1597). No public item-level image or occupier succession transcript naming Andrew, Elizat Stevinsoun or their son Robert was found. The original testament remains the direct evidence for Andrew's children; the estate series is a pending archival route to his own father and the children's later identities. Lack of a name-level catalogue hit is not evidence that the family is absent from the manuscripts.

Queue reconciliation — 30 September 2026

The retained Robert and Marion creation drafts were stale: these testament-defined children already have Glasgow-4006 and Glasgow-4095. Retire those creation recommendations and link their existing accounts. The later adult identification of Robert with Glasgow-1156 remains a compatible possibility, not an exclusion based only on an absent property bridge. Do not merge the profiles without comparing their respective record identities. The original Robert parentage and Marion father conclusion were already documented; this queue correction is not a newly certain relationship.

From the maintained transcription of NRS Edinburgh Commissary Court CC8/8/32, image 123 (`research/transcriptions/originals-2026-09-09/andrew-1598.json`, reviewed 27 September 2026); many names, places and amounts are illegible or queried:

- **Adviser:** the latter will names advisers whose counsel Elizat and Robert were to use, including **James Stevinsoun** (the draft spells it Stevisoun). The shared surname makes him a **possible** lead for Elizat Stevinsoun's family; the will states no relationship.
- **Owed to Andrew:** John Mure; Isobell [surname illegible], widow of the late John [surname illegible]; James Stevinsoun, about £10.
- **Owed by Andrew:** [name illegible] in Corsoun[?]; Johne Keddell[?], for a brown horse; James [surname illegible]; David Lyoun; Patrik Stevinsoun[?]; the laird of Westhall[?]. These are economic associates, not proved kin.
- **Inventory:** three cows with their calves at £8[?] each (£24[?]); two young beasts a year old; two horses at £10[?] each (£20[?]); nine sheep; eight bolls of oats at about four merks[?] a boll; barley (quantity illegible); household utensils, furnishings and clothing. Several values and the totals are unread and should not be filled in by calculation.

The earlier draft also reads a Johne Sandelandis in the confirmation and a closing clause in which a notary signed for Andrew because he could not write; the maintained transcription leaves that closing formula partly unresolved.
