Overall conclusion

Birth-date assessment: John's WikiTree value is before 1516, not an exact 1516 birth. He was already married to Jonet Spreull and receiving property with her on 31 December 1534. The record gives no age. The legal minimum marriage age supplies only a remote outer bound of birth before about 1520; treating him as an adult householder makes about 1510 the better working estimate, with roughly 1505-1516 a reasonable genealogical range. The existing before 1516 value is therefore defensible as a conservative boundary, but 1516 is not a recorded year.

Source findings — a further John Glesgw boundary, 6 August 1556

In William Hegait's protocol 307 (Robert Renwick, ed., Abstracts of Protocols of the Town Clerks of Glasgow, vol. II, 1896, printed p. 15, 6 August 1556, Internet Archive; locate by printed page and protocol number), Allan Roger and Jonet Scheles, spouses, sold a back tenement and yard to Andrew Morsoune and Jonet Gilleis, spouses, bounded by John Glesgw's land on the east, Thomas Bargille's on the south and Richard Ros's on the west. No Glasgow is a party or witness. Seen as the printed abstract, not the manuscript. Protocol 402 (22 November 1557, cited above among 401–403) has Andrew Morsoune and John Glesgw as neighbours of the Bargilly piece, so the two entries probably describe the same neighbourhood.

Like the 1554/55 and 1557 mentions above, this is a property reference only. The abstract does not itself identify the John Glesgw named; identity with this John is probable, by the same reasoning as those entries. A boundary can keep a former owner's name, so it proves neither that John was alive in 1556 nor any kinship.

Source findings — son Stephen and death by 17 June 1575

Glasgow protocol 2189 of 17 June 1575 records Stephen Glasgow, son of the deceased John Glasgow, selling property with the consent of Jonet Spreull, "his mother, liferentrix" (Robert Renwick, ed., Abstracts of Protocols of the Town Clerks of Glasgow, vol. 7, protocol 2189, printed p. 110, 17 June 1575). Seen as the printed abstract; its full text and citation were checked against the digitised edition on 27 September 2026 and are recorded in research/Spreull-4/findings.md. The protocol book itself was not inspected.

Jonet Spreull is this John's documented wife (protocol 1196 of 1534, and protocol 847 of 1565 reserving liferent to John and Jonet). The entry therefore shows that this John was dead by 17 June 1575 and that Stephen Glasgow (Glasgow-1029) was his son by Jonet. The abstract does not repeat John's own parentage, so identifying its John with this profile rests on Jonet being named. The free-space page John Glasgow-1 gives "dead before 8 November 1575"; that date comes from a derivative abstract with no protocol number (see Glasgow-1029's findings), and the June date should be used.

Other research notes

Rear-tenement title note - 30 August 2026

Protocol 748's Rankin–Young–St Mary boundaries identify the tenement conveyed to John junior as the rear component of the same family block whose fore tenement John senior inherited in protocol 805. Protocol 809 shows that Eufame Craig's liferent still burdened that rear fee. John senior could therefore convey the fee in 1563 and buy the outstanding liferent in 1564. Eufame is most likely the older John's widow: her interest can have been reserved before the fee passed rapidly to William, while the same-day Craig transactions and Craig witnesses fit a coordinated settlement. William as her husband is less likely because it requires Esbell Brade's death and William's remarriage within about fourteen months. The original is Glasgow City Archives B/10/1/3, especially protocol 748 near fol. 31 and protocols 805/809–810 through fol. 54.

Earlier title continuity - 30 August 2026

The institutional title now reaches William earlier and more exactly. A Liber Collegii instrument dated 20 February 1528/29 places William Glasgow immediately north of the Henryson/Houston parcel and Andrew Craig immediately south; this is the parcel later held by Rankin. The St Andrew prebend rental, confirmed 3 June 1542 and transumed 8 January 1548/49, charges four shillings on the tenement of the late William Glasgow between late John Crownar north and John Rankin south. That is the same sum and institutional title attached to the older John Glasgow's Rankin–Young tenement in 1527. Together with protocol 805, the evidence is direct for John's inheritance from William and strong for William's rapid succession to the older John's parcel; it does not identify the older John as William's father.

Birth-estimate audit - 21 August 2026

The live structured birth was corrected to about 1510, uncertain. John was an adult husband and property holder by 1534; the records supply no birth year. The earlier before value remains only a strict chronological boundary, not the most useful estimated birth. No biography, relationship, source or other structured field was changed in this audit.

Like the 1554/55 and 1557 mentions above, this is a property reference only. The abstract does not itself identify the John Glesgw named; identity with this John is probable, by the same reasoning as those entries. A boundary can keep a former owner's name, so it proves neither that John was alive in 1556 nor any kinship.

Source findings — son Stephen and death by 17 June 1575

Glasgow protocol 2189 of **17 June 1575** records **Stephen Glasgow, son of the deceased John Glasgow**, selling property with the consent of **Jonet Spreull, "his mother, liferentrix"** (Robert Renwick, ed., *Abstracts of Protocols of the Town Clerks of Glasgow*, vol. 7, protocol 2189, printed p. 110, [17 June 1575](https://archive.org/details/abstractsprotoc00robegoog/page/n126/mode/2up)). Seen as the printed abstract; its full text and citation were checked against the digitised edition on 27 September 2026 and are recorded in `research/Spreull-4/findings.md`. The protocol book itself was not inspected.

Jonet Spreull is this John's documented wife (protocol 1196 of 1534, and protocol 847 of 1565 reserving liferent to John and Jonet). The entry therefore shows that this John was **dead by 17 June 1575** and that [Stephen Glasgow (Glasgow-1029)](https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Glasgow-1029) was his son by Jonet. The abstract does not repeat John's own parentage, so identifying its John with this profile rests on Jonet being named. The free-space page *John Glasgow-1* gives "dead before 8 November 1575"; that date comes from a derivative abstract with no protocol number (see Glasgow-1029's findings), and the June date should be used.
