John Glasgow of Cross, near Broughshane, County Antrim, died in July 1836 in the 70th year of his age, according to the death notice in the Belfast Commercial Chronicle of 10 August 1836; the day reads 28th in the profile's quotation but is lost in the newspaper OCR. The Racavan gravestone, known from a transcription and an independent index, names him as father of William Glasgow, who died aged 22 in 1823 or 1829 (the readings differ), and records his widow Jane, who died in 1858 aged 85, and a daughter Jane Armstrong. A Glasgow holding at Cross in 1862 supports, but does not prove, his being father of John Glasgow (Glasgow-2407).

  • New: the original publication of the 1836 death notice. Belfast Commercial Chronicle, 10 August 1836, p. 3, deaths column (BNA article BL/0001287/18360810/010). The full-page OCR reads: "On the [day lost in the OCR] ult. Mr. John Glasgow, of Cross, near Broughshane, in the 70th year of his age. He died [as] he lived, [a] steady, sincere Christian." The profile quotes the same words, with "28th ult.", from Find a Grave without naming the newspaper; this is the source. In an issue of 10 August, "ult." means July. The death was therefore on 28 July 1836, provided the "28th" is confirmed on the page image. "In the 70th year of his age" means aged 69. That puts his birth between late July 1766 and July 1767. The stone gives "aged 70", a one-year difference that is common.
  • Adds detail: Findmypast's index of the Racavan stone. Antrim Cemetery Records (David Elliott), Racavan Burying Ground, reference R17-10. It indexes John Glasgow, died 1836, aged 70 (IRE/BMD/D/ANT/202500373); Jane Glasgow, died 1858, aged 85 (IRE/BMD/D/ANT/202500372); and William Glasgow, died 1829, aged 22 (IRE/BMD/D/ANT/202500374). The stone is already known from the offline thebraid.com transcription: "William Glasgow, who died 1823, aged 22. His father John Glasgow, 1836, aged 70. Jane Armstrong, daughter of the latter 1837, aged 38 And Jane, his widow 1858, aged 85". The index is an independent transcription with a plot reference. It confirms John (1836, aged 70) and Jane (1858, aged 85), but gives William's death as 1829, not 1823. One of the two readings is wrong, so the stone or a photograph must settle it. The index gives no townland and has no relationships. Jane Armstrong is not among the Glasgow-surname entries; she would be indexed under Armstrong, which was not searched.
  • Adds detail: Griffith's Valuation, Ballyclug parish, printed 23 January 1862 (IRE/GRIFF/003/003068/001/1). A John Glasgow occupied a holding in Cross townland, with Henry Joy Tomb as lessor. This record was not in the research corpus. He is very probably John Glasgow-2407, farmer of Cross, who married in 1865, died at Cross in 1874 aged 65, and named his father as "John Glasgow, farmer". The entry shows a Glasgow holding at Cross continuing after this John's death in 1836. That supports, but does not prove, this John as the father of John-2407. The 1865 Racavan marriage index entry (R_794917151; 11 September 1865, groom John, father John, bride Rachel Grey, father Robert) adds nothing to the original certificate already cited.
  • Searches that found nothing: Findmypast record searches keyed to Broughshane, Racavan and Skerry returned no other Glasgow records for this family. The all-Glasgow County Antrim search for 1700–1840 holds only the three Racavan stone entries for this area, and no will or administration for Cross or Broughshane. In the British Newspaper Archive, "john glasgow" with Broughshane (124 hits), "glasgow" with Broughshane for 1800–1860, "glasgow" with Ballyclug, and every "john glasgow" article of 1836 produced nothing new for this household. The only finds were the 1836 notice above and the college prize lists for James and Adam D. Glasgow of Broughshane (1828–1836), which are already known.
