How parent leads are calculated
Automated leads use birth surnames—not married surnames—as parental eligibility, role-specific biological age limits, bounded and approximate-date uncertainty, household chronology, specific time-aware localities, mapped distance, tenancy succession, migration destinations and sex-aware Scottish naming positions across generations. People already attached as the subject's parents stay in the identity summary and are excluded from this alternative-candidate list, regardless of relationship confidence. The main calibration uses clues available on disconnected profiles; existing parent and sibling links are retained as comparison context rather than treated as transferable evidence. Common ordered names and grandparent-to-child echoes receive a small non-zero weight, so a John or James match can support several independent criteria without producing a lead alone. Rare names, repeated bearers and bundles across otherwise distinct branches receive substantially more weight according to catalogue frequency. An exact migration place is weighted by its rarity and repetition across both branches; a shared destination country is worth only one point. Extra weight is added only when at least three independent clue types converge: naming, locality, specific migration, household chronology or collateral networks. Sparse profiles retain a clearly labelled chronology-only fallback instead of disappearing. Countries, states, counties and research clusters do not count as a shared locality, and fallback, broad representative or kin-inferred coordinates are excluded from distance scoring. Shared descendant profiles are removed before branch-name comparison. A candidate already recorded as a parent-in-law is excluded. A confident or independently supported parent is treated as settled; uncertain and unassessed attachments remain open to alternative comparison. A different linked parent, an uncle/aunt or grandparent path, and a matching existing child profile prevent an alternative from being classified as a strong direct-parent lead until the underlying tree conflict or duplicate is resolved. Familiar forms such as Bessie are normalised. Surname remains an eligibility filter worth zero points.
Naming customs, shared farms and occupations are circumstantial. Children, spouses and collateral relatives may be missing, and tree-derived family networks are not independent evidence. Scores rank research leads; they do not prove parentage.

How duplicate leads are calculated
Dates are eligibility gates, not merely deductions: chronologically impossible people are excluded. Dates, places, spouses, parent certainty and children's profiles and names are then compared. A high score is a prompt to inspect records, not a merge recommendation.

Conclusion
Retain this as the record-defined husband of Isobell Duffe and father of the Edinburgh children recorded from 1677 to 1691. His own parents and birth remain unknown.
Do not merge with Glasgow-1376. That profile's apparent 1657 birth is a role error: the cited event belongs to Marion Glasgow, with James named as her father. No record connects the Whitecastle material on Glasgow-1376 to this Duffe household.
The two sons named James, baptised in 1679 and 1680, should remain separate children. The unresolved question is which child, if either, survived to marry Jean Dobie.

Record-bearing passages
- Biography The parentage and birth date for James Glasgow are not yet known. Based on the birth of his first known child in 1677, he was likely born by about 1657.
- He was married to Isobell Duffe. Her name is recorded as "Issobell Duff" or "Issobell Duffe" in the christening records of most of their children.
James and Issobell had the following children, all christened in Edinburgh Parish, Midlothian, Scotland:
- Jean Glasgow, christened 13 April 1677. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTPF-7YB : 11 February 2020), James Glasgow in entry for Jean Glasgow, 1677.
- James Glasgow, christened 16 March 1679. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQC9-Q9J : 11 February 2020), James Glasgow in entry for James Glasgow, 1679. (See Research Notes regarding mother's name on this record).
- James Glasgow, christened 18 April 1680. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQC9-8S4 : 11 February 2020), James Glasgow in entry for James Glasgow, 1680. The christening of a second son with the same name strongly suggests the first James died in infancy.
- Mary Glasgow, christened 23 April 1682. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQCM-LLH : 11 February 2020), James Glasgow in entry for Mary Glasgow, 1682.
- Thomas Glasgow, christened 13 November 1684. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VQC9-N9X : 11 February 2020), James Glascow in entry for Thomas Glascow, 1684.
- Margaret Glasgow, christened 20 March 1691. "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FM3W-XBN : 11 February 2020), James Glasgow in entry for Margarett Glasgow, 1691.
The date and place of James's death are unknown, but he was alive as of March 1691. Research Notes Identifying the parents of James Glasgow is a top research priority. Several contemporary men named James Glasgow who were also having children in Edinburgh at the same time have been investigated and ruled out as being the same person, though they are likely relatives (e.g., brothers or cousins). These include:
- James Glasgow (b. 1631), who was married to Bessie Whyte.
- James Glasgow (b. bef. 1640), who was married to Helen Clerk.
- James Glasgow (b. ca. 1640), who was married to Annapill Glessie.
- Since our James was consistently recorded with his wife, Isobell Duffe, it is highly unlikely he is the same person as any of the men listed above.
Parentage is Unknown: The parents of James are not yet confirmed. The original profile suggested he might descend from the Midlothian line of James Glasgow (abt.1540-1580), perhaps as a son of Johne Glasgow (1632-) or John Glasgow (bef.1616-). This is speculative and requires further research to find a primary source linking him to a father.
- Conflicting Mother's Name: The 1679 christening record for his son James lists the mother's name as "Elizabeth Duffe" instead of "Issobell". As all other children's records name her as Issobell, and given the commonality of clerical errors, it is most likely that "Elizabeth" was a mistake by the parish clerk.
- Future Research: The highest priority is to find a marriage record for James Glasgow and Issobell Duffe in the Edinburgh parish registers, likely dated before April 1677. A search for burial records for both James and Issobell after March 1691 should also be conducted. Sources

Since our James was consistently recorded with his wife, Isobell Duffe, it is highly unlikely he is the same person as any of the men listed above. * Parentage is Unknown: The parents of James are not yet confirmed. The original profile suggested he might descend from the Midlothian line of James Glasgow (abt.1540-1580), perhaps as a son of Johne Glasgow (1632-) or John Glasgow (bef.1616-). This is speculative and requires further research to find a primary source linking him to a father. * Conflicting Mother's Name: The 1679 christening record for his son James lists the mother's name as "Elizabeth Duffe" instead of "Issobell". As all other children's records name her as Issobell, and given the commonality of clerical errors, it is most likely that "Elizabeth" was a mistake by the parish clerk. * Future Research: The highest priority is to find a marriage record for James Glasgow and Issobell Duffe in the Edinburgh parish registers, likely dated before April 1677. A search for burial records for both James and Issobell after March 1691 should also be conducted. Sources
