Robert Glasgow
29 December 1676
Glencorse, Midlothian, Scotland
About Robert
Robert is the documented Glencorse baptism subject of 29 December 1676 and the strong but unproved candidate for the 1704 husband of Margaret Davidson. She and their documented daughter Isobell are now attached as uncertain relatives. The three older children still attached to shipmaster Glasgow-2867 require a controlled candidate-father correction, retaining uncertainty rather than claiming proof of the two Roberts' identity. No evidence identifies the shipmaster as this man.

What the records show
Source findings
Scotland's People indexes Robert on 29 December 1676 at Glencorse, parish 687,
reference 10/8, naming John Glasgow and Margaret Currie. An exact search for
Robert Glasgow baptisms in that parish from 1640 through 1690 returns no other
entry.
A same-name man married Margaret Davidson at Glencorse on 8 June 1704 (20/53).
Same parish, age 27 and the absence of another indexed local baptism make
Glasgow-3011 a strong candidate for the groom and father of the 1708–1720
children. The marriage index supplies no age, parents or occupation, so the marriage and child links remain uncertain; the subsequent September relationship correction is recorded below.
Robert was seventeen at the 1694 North Leith poll tax and could also be
Alexander Ainslie's servant. A second record almost certainly concerns that
servant: on 16 July 1694 Robert Glasgow gave a receipt in Ainslie's name for
bottles supplied to the Earl of Breadalbane (GD112/15/59, item 24). This
proves a functional and probably trusted role in the glassworks business, but
no record links the Glencorse child to Ainslie. This younger candidate further
reduces the value of the North Leith occurrence as continuity evidence for any
older Robert, including Glasgow-1078 or Glasgow-3970.
An exact Scotland's People wills-and-testaments search for Robert Glasgow from
1690 through 1760 found no result; the same search under Glasgo, Glascow,
Glaskow and Glassgow was also negative. Targeted inspection of the Glencorse
kirk-session testimonial register, NRS CH2/181/1, found no Robert Glasgow or
Margaret Davidson on the pages covering 1704, 1708, 1710 and 1720. These are
limited negatives: the register is not a population list, and spelling or gaps
may conceal relevant evidence.
Source findingsSupplied OPR births and baptisms: row 91 — 10 September 2026
Scotland’s People, Old Parish Registers, births and baptisms; exact surname Glasgow through 1700, 127 supplied results. ROBERT GLASGOW; indexed date 29/12/1676; Glencorse; parish 687, reference 10 / 8. Parents/other exactly as indexed: JOHN GLASGOW/MARGARET CURRIE FR11 (FR11). Indexed gender: M.
Assessment: Matches the existing child-record account by indexed date, locality and recorded family. This row adds the complete index locator as supporting provenance; it does not establish a new event or relationship.
Original image not inspected for this batch. The combined collection’s date does not automatically establish a birthday. Names alone do not uniquely identify attached parents or connect a child with a later adult. An omitted parent or indexed gender U remains unspecified in this source.
Next action: No additional WikiTree update from this row; preserve any existing pending work.

Identity and relationship assessmentRelationship update, 2 September 2026
Isobell Glasgow (Glasgow-4062), baptised at Glencorse on 26 December 1714 to Robert Glasgow and Margaret Davidson, was created and attached to this profile as an uncertain daughter. Margaret Davidson (Davidson-20783) was also attached as this profile's uncertain wife with the exact 8 June 1704 Glencorse marriage. Both relationships remain uncertain because the records name Robert but do not uniquely identify this profile. The unsupported duplicate marriage between Margaret and the 1754 shipmaster Glasgow-2867 was removed and publicly verified on 2 September 2026.
