Identity and family

Parent-cluster placement - 31 August 2026

James Glasgow elder of Corsankell (Glasgow-1168) is Matthew's leading possible father or uncle. Both men were tenant/householder figures in the same 1559-60 Stevenston teind list: Matthew at Ardeer Nether and James elder at Corsankell. James had proved sons James and John in 1571, but that writ does not purport to enumerate every child. Matthew's estimated adult birth generation permits either a younger son or a younger brother/nephew.

Assessment: possible son or nephew; moderate locality/generation case. If a working father is required for tree navigation, James elder is the best candidate and the edge must remain uncertain. Michael-3911 is better treated as James's brother/cousin because he was already a legal witness in 1549.

Live application, 31 August 2026: James elder was attached as Matthew's working father with the explicit WikiTree status uncertain. Public family readback and the checked status control were verified.

The live structured birth was corrected to about 1540, uncertain. The 1559-60 teind list identifies Matthew as an adult tenant but supplies no birth year. The earlier before value remains only a strict chronological boundary, not the most useful estimated birth. No biography, relationship, source or other structured field was changed in this audit.

Mathie–Glencairn connection - 30 August 2026

The 1559–60 Cunninghame teind list places Matthew Glasgow and John Mathie together at Ardeer Nether. This was part of a wider local pattern: Margaret Mathie and William Mathie appear elsewhere in the same Stevenston list, along with Michael Glasgow and the two Corsankell James Glasgows, within the Cunningham/Glencairn estate landscape.

The connection is no longer based on the surname recurrence alone. On 10 May 1554 David Mathy and Robert Glasgow were fellow Glasgow burgesses and witnesses to the same sasine. David had a documented son John; a John Mathie later acted as a writer and was admitted with the Earl of Glencairn's burgess group in 1583. In 1600 a John Mathie of Clerkland had both John senior and junior in his family circle. The earl's servant John Mathie was killed in July 1606, while a second John Mathie wrote an estate bond that September and was probably his son.

The family can now be taken one step further. Tutory retours entered on 20 January 1607 identify the deceased John Mathie of Ibert's full brother as Matthew Mathie, burgess of Glasgow, and name John's lawful children James, David, Agnes and Margaret. Ibert was in Kilmaronock parish under Glencairn lordship, so this deceased John is a strong candidate for the servant killed in July 1606. His brother Matthew was probably the Glasgow burgh officer who appears in 1606–08. These are direct family and city links, although they do not identify Matthew Glasgow of Ardeer as a relative.

Jonet Mathie (Mathie-159), who married John Glasgow (Glasgow-1030) in 1618, may belong to that Clerkland–Glencairn household. This does not make the Ardeer John her proved ancestor, but it supplies a credible route between Matthew's Ayrshire group and Robert Glasgow's city family. Jonet is not among John of Ibert's four named children, but an older child could fall outside the tutory appointment and the younger writer's household remains another possibility.
