Jonet (Mathie) Glasgow

c. 1597

Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

About Jonet

Jonet Mathie married John Glasgow (Glasgow-1030) in Glasgow on 25 January 1618. She now has a plausible family corridor into the Glencairn household. A two-generation John Mathie family at Clerkland in 1600 fits the older and younger Glencairn servitors documented in 1606; the younger John is the best current candidate for Jonet's father or close older kinsman. No inspected record yet names her father.

Source Finding Assessment
Margaret H. B. Sanderson, The People of Sixteenth Century Ayrshire, p. 331, citing SRO Register of Acts and Decreets, vol. 22, fols. 102v-167v Matthew Glasgow and John Mathie appear together under Ardeer Nether in the 1559-60 teind list. Direct association between those two men; the list does not state kinship.
FamilySearch, John Glasgow and Jonet Mathie, 25 January 1618, Scotland marriage index Jonet Mathie married John Glasgow in Glasgow. Direct indexed marriage; inspect the original OPR image if available.
Renwick, Abstracts of Protocols, vol. 1, protocols 183–184, 10 May 1554 David Mathy and Robert Glasgow were fellow burgesses and witnesses to the same sasine. Direct earlier association between the two surname groups in Glasgow.
Glasgow burgess roll, 8 February 1582/83 John Mathie was admitted gratis in the same block as the Earl of Glencairn, James Cunningham and the earl's servant William Cochrane. Strong Glencairn patronage/household evidence.
Renwick, protocol 3710, 12 November 1600 Katherine Mathy, daughter of John Mathy in Clerkland, married a Glasgow burgess; John Mathie senior and junior witnessed. Establishes two contemporary generations in a Mathie family from the Glencairn locality.
Register of the Privy Council of Scotland, vol. 7, 1606 Glencairn's servant John Mathie was killed on 1 July; a second John Mathie wrote the earl's bond in September. Proves two men, consistent with the senior/junior pair. The later man was probably the victim's son, but the register does not state the relationship.
Tutory retours 100–101, 20 January 1607, Inquisitionum ... Retornatarum, vol. 2; underlying NRS C22/3 Matthew Mathie, Glasgow burgess and brother of the deceased John Mathie of Ibert, was nearest paternal agnate to John's lawful children James (youngest son), David, Agnes and Margaret. Direct kinship evidence. Jonet is not listed, although an older child not requiring a tutor could be absent. The date, Kilmaronock place and Glencairn ownership make John of Ibert a strong candidate for the servant killed in July 1606.
Glasgow testament index, John Mathie of Ibert, confirmed 9 November 1607 The Ibert testament followed the 1606 death and January 1607 tutory proceedings. Priority original: it may name John's spouse, executor and associates beyond the children proved by the retours.
Source findings, 10 September 2026

The supplied Glasgow OPR row names Johne Glasgow and Jonat Mathen, dated 25 January 1618 (parish 644/1, reference 230/32). The surname may be a Mathie/Mathe spelling or index reading: the local evidence already identifies Jonet Mathie as wife of John Glasgow and cites the same date. This is a compatible match, not an exact-spelling duplicate claim; retain the existing qualification until the original register is read.

Source findings — earlier Mathie chronology behind the Glencairn bridge, 1551–1606

The Mathie–Glencairn analysis carries these steps, which this file did not:

Date Finding Assessment
3 February 1550/51 David Mathy and his spouse Margaret Anderson acquired a barn beside the Malyndinor Burn, Glasgow. Shows David as a married Glasgow property holder before 1554.
25 October 1571 John Mathy was described as David Mathe's son. Direct father–son statement as summarised in the analysis.
4 August 1574 A John Mathie, writer, witnessed a Glasgow charter. A plausible later appearance of David's son; not proved.
23–24 September 1606 A second John Mathie, the earl's servitor, wrote a Glencairn bond at Kilmaronock and Bar. A scholarly study identifies him as apparently the son of the John Mathie killed on 1 July: MacKechnie, “Sir David Cunningham of Robertland”, Architectural History. An interpretation, not a record stating the relationship.

The analysis gives no protocol number or page for the 1551, 1571 and 1574 entries; they should be found in the printed Glasgow protocol abstracts before they are cited. The sequence from David's son John through the 1574 writer and the 1583 Glencairn burgess to John senior of Clerkland is, in the analysis's own words, strong circumstantial reconstruction, not identity proof, and none of it names Jonet's father.

Recorded in research/Glasgow-3908/mathie-glencairn-bridge-1554-1618.md (undated; first committed 2 September 2026); carried into this file on 7 October 2026.

Identity and family

Relationship assessmentThe strongest reconstruction runs from David Mathy and his documented son John through a writer of that name, the 1583 Glencairn burgess, and the John senior/junior household at Clerkland.

The strongest reconstruction runs from David Mathy and his documented son John through a writer of that name, the 1583 Glencairn burgess, and the John senior/junior household at Clerkland. It is circumstantial but coherent in name, occupation, generation, patronage and locality. John of Ibert is now the leading identity for the older Glencairn servant killed in 1606. His proved brother Matthew was a Glasgow burgess and was still serving the burgh in 1608. Jonet could be an older daughter omitted from the tutory returns, or a daughter or close relative of the younger Glencairn writer, but she is not among John's four named children.

This matters to the Glasgow genealogy because Robert Glasgow was directly associated with David Mathy in 1554, while the Glencairn estate network later contained Matthew, Michael and the Corsankell Glasgow family. If Jonet's husband was Robert's son John, the 1618 marriage may continue the earlier civic association while also connecting the city family socially to the Ayrshire cluster. This is a promising bridge, not yet proof of shared Glasgow ancestry.

Do not confuse these men with John Mathie the Glasgow cordiner, who was the son of Allan Mathie and brother of David Mathie in 1607.
