How parent leads are calculated

Automated leads use birth surnames—not married surnames—as parental eligibility, role-specific biological age limits, bounded and approximate-date uncertainty, household chronology, specific time-aware localities, mapped distance, tenancy succession, migration destinations and sex-aware Scottish naming positions across generations. People already attached as the subject's parents stay in the identity summary and are excluded from this alternative-candidate list, regardless of relationship confidence. The main calibration uses clues available on disconnected profiles; existing parent and sibling links are retained as comparison context rather than treated as transferable evidence. Common ordered names and grandparent-to-child echoes receive a small non-zero weight, so a John or James match can support several independent criteria without producing a lead alone. Rare names, repeated bearers and bundles across otherwise distinct branches receive substantially more weight according to catalogue frequency. An exact migration place is weighted by its rarity and repetition across both branches; a shared destination country is worth only one point. Extra weight is added only when at least three independent clue types converge: naming, locality, specific migration, household chronology or collateral networks. Sparse profiles retain a clearly labelled chronology-only fallback instead of disappearing. Countries, states, counties and research clusters do not count as a shared locality, and fallback, broad representative or kin-inferred coordinates are excluded from distance scoring. Shared descendant profiles are removed before branch-name comparison. A candidate already recorded as a parent-in-law is excluded. A confident or independently supported parent is treated as settled; uncertain and unassessed attachments remain open to alternative comparison. A different linked parent, an uncle/aunt or grandparent path, and a matching existing child profile prevent an alternative from being classified as a strong direct-parent lead until the underlying tree conflict or duplicate is resolved. Familiar forms such as Bessie are normalised. Surname remains an eligibility filter worth zero points.

Naming customs, shared farms and occupations are circumstantial. Children, spouses and collateral relatives may be missing, and tree-derived family networks are not independent evidence. Scores rank research leads; they do not prove parentage.

How duplicate leads are calculated

Dates are eligibility gates, not merely deductions: chronologically impossible people are excluded. Dates, places, spouses, parent certainty and children's profiles and names are then compared. A high score is a prompt to inspect records, not a merge recommendation.

Current conclusion

Glasgow-3940 · updated 2026-08-18

This profile already represents the unnamed Glascow baptised in 1838 to Alex and Molly McAughern of Gortereagh. The baptism is not a new finding and no forename is supplied by the transcription. The profile's before 1841 death is a defensible inference, not a directly recorded death date.

The best current assessment is probably died before the 1841 census date, with an explicit uncertainty marker. The child was not listed anywhere in the family's surviving 1851 return: not among the residents, not among absent family, and not among deaths since 1841. An unrecorded move, permanent removal from the household, or enumerator omission cannot be excluded absolutely.

Rasharkin Presbyterian baptism transcription, entry 106An unnamed Glascow child of Alex and Molly McAughern of Gortereagh appears among the 1838 entries.Supports the child's existence, parents, locality and approximate year; it supplies neither forename nor death.
1851 census transcription, Lisnagaver household 35, p. 182The return contains Alexander, Mary, Robert, James and Ann only. It has no absent or death row for another child.Strong negative family-level evidence. It favours death before 1841 but does not directly prove it.
National Archives guidanceThe 1851 census listed household members absent on census night and family members who had died since 1841.Explains why absence from all three sections is more informative than absence from an ordinary census household.
1894 Michigan census imageSamuel Glasgow, 56, was Irish-born of Irish-born parents and reported about 37 years in the United States.Compatible age only. It does not name County Antrim, Gortereagh, Alexander or Mary and requires the child to have been omitted from every relevant 1851 category.

Rejected identity

Glasgow-3940 · updated 2026-08-18

Samuel Glasgow of Franklin/Blissfield, Michigan, is not a credible match on current evidence. The theory arose from approximate age, Irish birth and his presence in the same Michigan county as the possible later James. Those are weak cluster clues. They do not overcome the 1851 family return, the absence of any American parent or County Antrim statement, or the impossible cemetery birth transcription 29 February 1838.

Do not rename Glasgow-3940 as Samuel, attach the Michigan wife, or add a migration claim. The Michigan records are retained under Alexander's sources as a rejected-candidate audit.

Glasgow-3940 · updated 2026-08-18

An unnamed child of Alex Glasgow and Molly McAughern of Gortereagh was recorded in the Rasharkin Presbyterian baptism transcription in 1838. The child does not appear as a resident or absent family member in Alexander's 1851 household and is not included among family deaths since 1841. Death before 1841 is therefore probable but has not been confirmed by a burial or death record.
