The published Larne Parish Churchyard monument directly identifies James as a son of Hugh and Ann Glasgow. He died 14 April 1812 aged 64, placing his birth approximately between 15 April 1747 and 14 April 1748. The same inscription names his wife Jane and daughter Ann Glasgow-3992.

Larne tanner identification — 20 August 2026

Three records form a coherent tanner sequence and distinguish this man from the older Larne ropemaker Glasgow-1509:

In the 28 March 1768 ropewalk assignment, the principal James Glasgow is a ropemaker, but a second James Glasgow who witnessed the deed is explicitly described as a tanner. The witness later swore to its execution at Larne.
A mortgage dated 22 June 1778 concerning houses and garden ground in Newtown of Larne was witnessed by James Glasgow of Larne, tanner, and John Weir, notary. James swore the affidavit at Larne on 29 June 1778.
The original Registry of Deeds memorial 278037, FamilySearch image 437 calls the Larne witness James Glasgow, Tanner in a lease dated 14 January 1784; it was sworn 17 August and registered 23 August 1790. The handwritten occupation settles the former automated “turner” reading.
The known 1786 Blackcave lease names James Glasgow, tanner of Larne.

The chronology fits the monument-derived birth about 1747–1748: he was about twenty or twenty-one in 1768, about thirty in 1778 and about thirty-eight or thirty-nine in 1786. This is substantially stronger than assigning the tanner records to Glasgow-1509, whose separate ropemaker occupation is documented from 1760 through the 1799 Alexander Holmes will.

The identification remains strong rather than fully proved because none of the deeds names James's wife, parents or child. The occupational sequence should be cited in the biography while that limitation is stated.

The 1779–1832 property succession

Newtown title succession — 21 September 2026

The original recital in an indenture of 25 March 1874, registered 24 August 1874, traces James Glasgow's 2 October 1779 Newtown lease to a 25 February 1832 renewal to Anne Glasgow and Jane Glasgow. The 24-foot north-side tenement was formerly John English's and bounded by Hugh Glasgow's former tenement on the west. This is direct title succession, not a stated descent. Neither the 1779 James nor the women's identities are securely assigned. James-3991's wife Jane died 1820 and cannot automatically be the 1832 Jane; Ann-3992 is only a candidate for Anne. Inspect the 1832 renewal for relationship wording and intervening assignments.

The two 1768 assignments

Two distinct assignments — 21 September 2026

Two assignments by James Glasgow, ropemaker, to John Hill share the date 28 March 1768 and registration date 2 November 1768, but concern different leases:

Memorial 173104, p. 510, image 258 assigns the ropewalk plot and workhouse, held for 31 years from 1 November 1760 at £1 14s 1½d yearly. The witness James Glasgow is explicitly Tanner, both in the witness clause and the affidavit; John Houston, merchant, is the other witness. This remains valid evidence for the separate tanner sequence, probably James Glasgow-3991.
Memorial 173108, opening, image 259, with continuation p. 513, image 260, concerns a messuage held on a 60-year lease at £5 2s 6d yearly. Its witness James Glasgow is explicitly Farmer, repeated in the affidavit; John Houston, merchant, also witnesses this instrument.

Both original occupation readings were independently checked. The Farmer wording does not overturn the Tanner reading in the other deed. Whether the two witnesses were the same man with different descriptions or namesakes remains unresolved. The farmer is not assigned to the tanner or to the South Carolina settler from this record alone; neither assignment supplies kinship.

Uncertain son Hugh, deceased by 1843

Hugh Glasgow-4180, the deceased testator named in the 1843 marriage settlement, is attached as James’s uncertain son. Naming and generation fit are compatibility only: neither the monument nor the settlement names Hugh as James’s son. No mother is inferred. Hugh’s possible fatherhood of Mary Glasgow-4181 is a separate low-confidence hypothesis.

This man cannot be the already-established ropemaker Glasgow-1509: he was only about twelve or thirteen when the ropewalk was advertised in January 1761. The new separate profile correctly prevents that chronological conflation.

James: died 14 April 1812 aged 64, so born 15 April 1747 to 14 April 1748.
His wife Jane (WikiTree Unknown-763421, shown there as born 1750): "his wife Jane Glasgow died 21st July 1820 aged 79 years", so born 22 July 1740 to 21 July 1741 and died 21 July 1820. The 1750 birth year has no stated basis and is about ten years too late.
Ann (Glasgow-3992): died 25 May 1832 aged 64, so born 26 May 1767 to 25 May 1768. The stone calls her the daughter of "the last named", Jane; on these dates James was 19 to 21 and Jane 25 to 27 at Ann's birth, so James's fatherhood of Ann is inferred from the shared stone and surname.
