Current family assessment

Glasgow-1499 is the canonical live profile for Hugh of Larne, born about 1705 and died 8 July 1767; Glasgow-1503 redirects here. The earlier recommendation to merge in the opposite direction is superseded. Porter’s session list assigns the 1726 death to James, not Hugh. Hugh’s own parentage remains uncertain.

John Glasgow of Larne (Glasgow-4179) is now attached to Hugh Glasgow (Glasgow-1499) as an uncertain son, with low confidence. This is a working hypothesis based on locality and generation, not a record naming his father. Older William (Glasgow-1505) remains viable. No mother is attached; Hugh's wife Ann is not thereby identified as John's mother.

The duplicate marriage has been resolved: Rose Allan (Allan-6611) is the wife of the Larne John, married in 1769 according to the archived Kilwaughter/Larne chronology. Allan-8249 now redirects to Allan-6611, the older ID required by WikiTree. Both Rose profiles cited the same marriage; neither supplied an independent Rose baptism. Her estimated birth about 1750 and inferred County Antrim birthplace remain uncertain. The chronology's 1745–48 birth estimate concerns John, not Rose.

John Glasgow of West Calder (Glasgow-2846), son of John Glasgow (Glasgow-2847) and Margaret Anderson, remains a separate identity. Rose has been detached from him. The 1747 Scottish baptism citation has not been re-inspected beyond the existing citation because FamilySearch requires sign-in. No inspected evidence joins that Scottish child to the Larne groom; this separation does not prove that they could never be the same man.

The original PRONI MIC/1B/6 marriage and baptism entries and the named lives in the 1751/1767 endorsements to lease D2977/3A/4/81/72A remain the tests for Hugh versus William. The Larne memorial, pp.47–48, does not name John and is not proved to enumerate every surviving child.

Hugh and the Shutter family in1749

Original Glasgow–Shutter mortgage — 21 September 2026

Registry memorial 97407, FamilySearch image449, records a mortgage dated6November1749 by William Eakine of Larne to Hugh Shutter and Hugh Glasgow. The original image names Hugh Glasgow as a Larne merchant and shows him executing the memorial. The premises were in Old Town Larne and the underlying lease dated11August1748. This is strong locality/chronology evidence for this Hugh, though the record names no relatives. It documents a Glasgow–Shutter business association before the reported James–Janet marriage; it does not prove that marriage or Hugh's parentage of either James-1509 or John-4179.

Joint lessor records, 1736–1757

The inspected original memorial 63221 is dated 10 March 1736, registered 10 April 1738, and names William and Hugh Glasgow of Larne as joint lessees of two north-side Newtown tenements. Its three named lives are George II, Frederick Prince of Wales and Prince William Augustus, not relatives; the lease witnesses include James Stenhouse and William Harrison. A separate 4 June 1757 assignment, memorial 159181, manuscript pp.473–474, refers to a head lease granted by William and Hugh Glasgow of Larne. These records strengthen the joint property association, but neither names a parent, spouse, child or relationship between the two men.

The only Glasgow death the list assigns to 1726 is James's: "James Glasgow (erased), deceased 1726".

Findmypast's Hugh Glasgow searches for Ireland, 1730–1850, hold no Larne record: the wills and administrations indexed for 1825–1833 belong to Hugh Glasgow of Drumgreenagh, County Armagh (IRE/DIOC/WILL/00011507, IRE/INREV/WILLS/0148379/1, died 22 February 1825), and the 1740 Hughs are in Tamlaght O'Crilly. Nothing found bears on Hugh's parentage or on John-4179 as his son.

The live redirect resolves the 1499/1503 duplicate-profile question. It does not establish Hugh’s own father or the proposed son John. No independent record defines a separate Hugh who died in 1726.

On WikiTree Hugh's line continues Hugh → John Glasgow-4179 of Larne → John Glasgow-4090, the record-defined John Glasgow, farmer, who is the probable father of Alexander Glasgow-951. Neither link is documented. Hugh → John-4179 is possible, on locality and generation only; the Larne monument does not name a son John. John-4179 → John, farmer, has no record and no uncertain flag, and a son of the 1769 marriage would be barely twenty at the birth of Samuel Glasgow-2908 about 1789 to 1791. Marking that second link uncertain is queued for review.

Naming gives the route no support: Hugh, a recurring Larne forename, occurs nowhere among John farmer's probable children or documented grandchildren. The absence excludes nothing. No relationship is changed. Full comparison.

The derivative Kilwaughter chronology lists a "Hugh1 Glasgow, d. 1726 (Record found in Old Presbyterian Church Record Book)". Porter's printed list does not support a Hugh who died in 1726. The first page of the 1721 session book (presumably within PRONI MIC/1B/6) should be read to rule out a second 1726 Glasgow entry before the merger of the former Glasgow-1503 into this profile is treated as closed.

No change to the values. Hugh died on 8 July 1767 aged 62, so he was born between 9 July 1704 and 8 July 1705; his wife Ann died on 8 June 1786 aged 75, so she was born between 9 June 1710 and 8 June 1711 and was about 20 at the baptism of Jean in 1731. The death should be shown as published from the monument, 8 July 1767, and the birth as the estimate; the catalogue currently shows the death as estimated.

A FamilySearch index entry records a Hugh Glascoe baptised in Dublin in 1704, son of William Glascoe and Jone (FR3H-8L7). Hugh of Larne died on 8 July 1767 aged 62, so was born between July 1704 and July 1705, which fits the year. Nothing else links the Dublin child to Larne: a similar name and an approximate date are not enough to identify them as one man. Seen as an index entry only. Unresolved.
