Memorial 173104 records James Glasgow, ropemaker, assigning the ropewalk and workhouse to John Hill on 28 March 1768; a second James Glasgow witnesses as tanner.

Finding qualified

Original occupation reading checked. This distinguishes the principal from his same-name witness, but does not establish the tanner’s family identity.

New records

A deed dated 12 May 1772 names Wm Glasgow of Larne as a witness; it was registered on 9 November 1784.

Finding qualified

Original manuscript inspected. No age, occupation or relative distinguishes the older and younger William; registration does not establish survival to 1784.

The inspected original 1911 Gortereghy census return records Alexander Elder, aged 40, as head, Mary Elder, aged 44, as wife, Robert Elder, aged 34, as brother, and Margaret Elder, aged 25, as sister (Form A, official index house 37, nai001390156, rows 1–4). These stated relationships support comparison with the 1901 household, the 1908 marriage lead and the Rasharkin Second Presbyterian memorial; identification with existing profiles remains qualified.

Finding qualified

Original register or Form A inspected on 30 September 2026; source-specific image and entry references supplied. Profile identities and cross-record continuity remain qualified where stated.

The 1911 Gortereghy census browse records Sarah McCaughern, aged 82, as head of household with Matilda Mulholland, 52, and Caroline McCaughern, 47, recorded as daughters; Sara Jane McCaughern, 45, and Jas Alex McCaughern, 43, are also listed as children, with Geo Mulholland, 14, as grandson. It confirms a substantial McCaughern household in the same townland as the Elder and Glasgow-associated records, but it does not identify Sarah's husband, parents or relationship to Mary Glasgow.

Finding qualified

Original register or Form A inspected on 30 September 2026; source-specific image and entry references supplied. Profile identities and cross-record continuity remain qualified where stated.

Family relationships

The 1912 Belfast and Ulster Directory lists John Elder, junior, as a grocer and postmaster among the inhabitants of Rasharkin. In the neighbourhood section it separately lists James Elder and James Elder, junior at Ballydonnelly.

Finding qualified

They add useful identity clues for separating the later Elder households, but the directory does not identify either man as Robert Elder's son or brother. The source is a directory, not a parentage record.

A 2007 RootsChat research post reproduces a 18 June 1908 Second Portglenone Presbyterian marriage entry for Alexander Elder, full-age bachelor farmer of Gortreaghy, whose father is recorded as Robert Elder, farmer. Alexander married Mary Anderson, full-age spinster of Gortreaghy, daughter of Neil Anderson; witnesses were Robert Anderson and Margaret Elder.

Finding qualified

The entry is not yet an inspected original, so it is a secondary-source lead rather than final evidence. It is nevertheless a new, specific parent-bearing record for the Gortreaghy Elder household and gives a testable route for determining whether the Alexander Elder on the Rasharkin Second Presbyterian memorial was a son of the Robert Elder who later occupied Alexander Glasgow's Lisnagaver lot. That identity chain remains unproved.

The reproduced Second Portglenone Presbyterian marriage list records Isaac Elder, full-age bachelor farmer of Gohorney, marrying Jane Elliott on 19 February 1903. Isaac's father is recorded as Robert Elder, farmer.

Finding qualified

This is another catalogue-absent parent-bearing record for a Robert Elder household in the Rasharkin area. It supports the existence of a substantial local Elder family network, but does not by itself identify Isaac's Robert with Robert Elder, husband of Mary Glasgow, or establish any Glasgow relationship.

The 1912 Belfast and Ulster Directory lists John Wallace as a teacher at Lisnagaver in the neighbourhood inhabitants section for Rasharkin. It adds a contemporary local associate to the Lisnagaver network, but no evidence currently connects John Wallace to Nancy Glasgow's nephew Robert Wallace Anderson or to the Glasgow family.

Finding qualified

The directory gives no age, address beyond Lisnagaver or relationship.

The same reproduced Second Portglenone Presbyterian marriage list records Neal Anderson, full-age bachelor farmer of Gortreaghy, marrying Sarah Elder, full-age spinster of Gortreaghy, on 28 September 1893. Sarah's father is recorded as Robert Elder, farmer; witnesses were Robert Anderson and Nancy Elder.

Finding qualified

This is a new parent-bearing record for the Gortreaghy Elder household and is consistent with the 1908 entry naming Alexander Elder as a son of a Robert Elder, but the shared father's identity and any connection to Robert Elder, husband of Mary Glasgow, remain unproved until the original register is inspected.

Family relationships

A reproduced Second Portglenone Presbyterian marriage list records John Elder of Gortrechy marrying Peggy Stuart of Killycuggin on 7 April 1842. The witnesses were James Ray and James Stuart.

Finding qualified

It establishes an earlier Elder household in the same local area and supplies names for future church and civil-record tracing, but it does not identify John as an ancestor of Robert Elder; Robert's 1871 marriage names his father as Nathaniel Elder. The source is a secondary transcription and the original register remains to be inspected.

Family relationships

The same 1911 Gortereghy census browse records Neal Anderson, aged 65, with Abraham Anderson, aged 60, and Robert Anderson, aged 50, each identified as brothers within the household. It is relevant as FAN context because Robert Anderson appears as a witness in the 1908 Elder marriage transcription and the Anderson surname also occurs in the Elder marriage network.

Finding qualified

It does not establish a relationship to Alexander Glasgow or to the Glasgow family.

The same 1911 Gortereghy browse lists two further Elder households not currently represented in the catalogue: Joseph Elder, aged 79, with Ellen Elder, aged 38, recorded as his niece, and William Elder, aged 40, with Elizabeth Elder, aged 50, recorded as his sister. This demonstrates that Gortereghy contained several distinct Elder households at the same time.

Finding qualified

Original register or Form A inspected on 30 September 2026; source-specific image and entry references supplied. Profile identities and cross-record continuity remain qualified where stated.

The 1912 Belfast and Ulster Directory lists Robert McCaughern, farmer, Lisnagaver in the neighbourhood section for Rasharkin. It is a useful later locality lead because Lisnagaver is the Glasgow family's documented townland and the directory places a McCaughern farmer there after the 1851 and 1901–1911 census evidence.

Finding qualified

It does not identify Robert's age, parents or relationship to Mary Glasgow, and it must not be merged with any other Robert McCaughern without the underlying valuation, census or civil records.

A fresh audit of the surviving Rasharkin Presbyterian baptism transcription located a second parent-bearing McCaughern/Macaw household at the target townland. Hugh Macaw was born 3 February 1839 and baptised 3 March 1839 as the son of William and Mary Kilpatrick, resident at Lisnagaver (entry 125).

Finding qualified

The same register records Jane Matilda Macaw, born 26 July 1843 and baptised 14 January 1844, as the daughter of William and Mary Kilpatrick at Granagh (entry 204). Named transcription reread 30 September 2026; originalmanuscriptuninspected.

The source previously cited for a supposed 8 November 1839 Kilraughts marriage was rechecked. Its entry is for Alexander Montgomery, a shoemaker, marrying Jane McCaughey, daughter of John McCaughey, before witnesses Betty Hay and William Hay.

Finding qualified

It does not name Alexander Glasgow, Mary McCaughan/McAughin, or any Glasgow parent.

The reproduced marriage list records Alex Hillis, full-age bachelor merchant of Ballymena, marrying Annie Elder, full-age spinster of Gortereghy, on 7 July 1857. Annie's father is recorded as James Elder, farmer; witnesses were James McChesney and Robert Bell.

Finding qualified

It adds another distinct Elder household in the Gortereghy area and names two witnesses for future tracing, but it does not connect Annie or James Elder to Robert Elder, whose 1871 marriage names Nathaniel Elder as father. The source is a secondary transcription and the original register remains to be inspected.

A reproduced Second Portglenone Presbyterian marriage list records John Elder, full-age bachelor of Rasharkin, marrying Annie Patterson, aged 20, on 12 May 1886. John's father is recorded as John Elder, farmer; Annie's father as David Patterson, farmer.

Finding qualified

Original register or Form A inspected on 30 September 2026; source-specific image and entry references supplied. Profile identities and cross-record continuity remain qualified where stated.

The reproduced Third Portglenone Presbyterian marriage list records Robert Elder, full-age bachelor labourer of Ballymoney, marrying Jane Adams McCaughey, full-age spinster of Garvaghey, on 13 July 1887. Robert's father is recorded as James Elder, labourer; Jane's father as William McCaughey, labourer.

Finding qualified

The witnesses were Archie McCaughey and Lizzie Connaghy. It is useful chiefly as a confirmed namesake-separation record: this Robert should not be merged with Robert Elder, Mary's 1871 husband, whose father was recorded as Nathaniel Elder and whose occupation was farmer. The source is a secondary transcription and the original register remains to be inspected.

The 1912 Belfast and Ulster Directory lists Peter McCaughern as a grocer and farmer among the inhabitants of Rasharkin. It may be relevant to the later Rasharkin McCaughern probate network, but the directory gives no age, address or family relationship, so this Peter must not be merged with the Peter McCaughern of the 1916 Dreen probate cluster without further evidence.

Finding qualified

Inspected named transcription or derivative source; original record uninspected and family identity not established.

The published headstone transcription for Rasharkin Second Presbyterian Church records a memorial erected by Alexander Elder of Gortrickey to his father Robert Elder, his mother Jane, and his sisters and brothers. It also records Alexander Elder's death on 5 January 1943.

Finding qualified

This is a new direct memorial transcription for the catalogue's parentage study, not a Glasgow record and not proof that the Elder family was related to Alexander Glasgow. Its value is locality context: Gortrickey/Gortereghy is the townland where the Glasgow family appears in the 1837–1838 Rasharkin Presbyterian baptism entries. The memorial supplies a named Elder household for future comparison with the later Robert Elder who occupied Alexander Glasgow's former Lisnagaver lot; identity between those Elder references remains unproved.

The 1912 Belfast and Ulster Directory lists Thomas Ross as a mill owner at Gortreighy in the neighbourhood inhabitants section for Rasharkin. It adds a named economic and geographic associate in the townland where the Glasgow family lived in the earlier baptism period, but it does not establish any relationship to Alexander Glasgow or the McCaughan/Elder families.

Finding qualified

Inspected named transcription or derivative source; original record uninspected and family identity not established.

The 1912 Belfast and Ulster Directory lists Nancy McCaughern as a publican among the inhabitants of Rasharkin. It is a useful later record for separating McCaughern women in the locality, but it must not be conflated with Nancy Glasgow, with the Nancy McCaughern named on the James McCaughern memorial, or with any other McCaughern profile without an address, age or family record.

Finding qualified

Inspected named transcription or derivative source; original record uninspected and family identity not established.

Family relationships

The 30 July 1861 Prescott deed identifies Daniel Glasgow of Kilrea, watchmaker, and Thomas Glasgow of Lisnagaver, farmer, with their wives Margaret and Mary Anne, selling interests under brother Robert’s will.

Finding supported

Original deeds inspected. Combined places, trades, wives and earlier sibling evidence identify these brothers and establish their sibling relationships. The records name no parents and do not establish a sibling relationship to Alexander-951.

Sibling relationships became certain

Daniel Glasgow (Glasgow-3896); Thomas Glasgow (Glasgow-987) — sibling: Robert Glasgow of Prescott (Glasgow-4150). Uncertain → Certain. The original 1849 Robert will names Daniel and Thomas as brothers; the original B465 deed of 30 July 1861 identifies the corresponding Irish beneficiaries by Kilrea/watchmaker/Margaret and Lisnagaver/farmer/Mary Anne. Together with established Daniel–Thomas brotherhood, these identify the known Irish men with Robert’s named brothers.

Sibling relationships became certain

Daniel Glasgow (Glasgow-3896); Thomas Glasgow (Glasgow-987) — sibling: Samuel Glasgow, Prescott merchant (Glasgow-4010). Uncertain → Certain. Robert’s will names Samuel, Daniel and Thomas as brothers; the 1861 deed identifies Daniel and Thomas by their places, trades and wives, resolving their identity with the Irish profiles and placing them in Samuel’s sibling group.

Mary Glasgow, widow, housewife, aged 89, died at Gortahar on 17 February 1892; daughter Mary Elder was present. The formerly maintained 27 February date was a transcription error. Identification with Mary McCaughan is strongly supported through the 1871 Elder–Glasgow marriage and Lisnagaver family evidence.

Finding qualified

Original register image and enlarged entry independently checked. Identification with Mary McCaughan is strongly supported by the daughter and family evidence; the death return does not name her maiden surname.

The original 1911 Gortahar census reports Samuel Glasgow, aged two; his 4 July 1908 civil birth names him Samuel Elder, son of unmarried Jane Elder, with no father recorded.

Finding qualified

Both original records inspected. The surname difference is reported usage, not an index typo; neither record identifies a Glasgow father.
