About William
No reviewed record identifies Glasgow-591's father or proves which Scottish William became the ancestor remembered in the late Tyrone family history. The Cavers Covenanter is now the strongest identified candidate because a man in his immediate 1679 prisoner sequence, James Young, is documented among survivors who later went to Ulster. That remains FAN evidence, not a migration or father-son record for William.

Summary of the research
Overall conclusion
Public Y-DNA results provisionally connect the William-attributed line to the later Kilwaughter line within the broader R-FT25406 paternal cluster. The William-attributed Big-Y tester is confirmed R-FT20271; the Robert-c.1710 and James-1731 kits are only STR-grouped in the parent FT25406 subgroup and require Big-Y confirmation. This supports older shared paternal ancestry, not the paper identity of William or descent from him.

- Read the original 1725 Cavankilgreen memorial and recover the omitted forename, lives, bounds, witnesses and occupations.
- Read the original 1728 Gortigillagh memorial and reconstruct its Johnston FAN network.
- Obtain the 1673 Quothquan testament
CC14/5/9, then the 1624, 1650, 1662 and 1685 entries as a group. Do not attach the cluster without a linking record. - Search Cavers estate, kirk-session and tax material for William, Leeden/Leyden and Ormiston after 1684.
- Upgrade a documented direct-male descendant of Robert-1143/Kilwaughter to Big Y. FT20271-positive would place both tested lines on the same early-modern branch; FT25406-positive/FT20271-negative would show collateral branches.
Source findingsFindmypast sweep — 7 October 2026
- Searches that found nothing for the Irish leads: Findmypast has no Glasgow-surname record keyed to Cavankilgreen, Augher, Gortigillagh or Ballybogey. The County Tyrone and County Leitrim surname searches (1700–1860) found no earlier William than the 1740 Derryloran householder (
IRE/PRONI/1740PH/G/00361), who is already in the Derryloran research (Glasgow-2990) and is not linked to this profile. Newspaper searches for "William Glasgow" with Clogher found nothing. - New, unlinked: Clogher diocesan marriage licence bond, 1747. Findmypast's Ireland Diocesan and Prerogative Marriage Licence Bonds Indexes lists Martha Glascow and Daniel Viridet, diocese of Clogher, 1747 (
IRE/DIOC/MAR44039; index image IRE/DIOC/007246529/00118). The index gives no residence or parents. It is the only eighteenth-century Glasgow entry found for Clogher diocese, which covers south Tyrone, but nothing connects Martha to the 1725 Cavankilgreen occupier or to this William. - Adds detail to the Leitrim lead. Betham's Genealogical Abstracts (Prerogative administrations, intestate, "G" 1776–1800) has an entry dated 24 January 1782 for James Glasgow, gent., of Aghadonvane, County Leitrim, with Catherine as his spouse (
IRE/NAI/GENABS/00401119/1and/2; image S2/IRE/NAI/007634676/00583). Aghadunvane was one of the lands in the 1728 Johnston-network deed that John Glasgow of Gortigillagh witnessed, so this keeps a gentry Glasgow family on the same Leitrim lands fifty years later. It is evidence for the Leitrim family (Glasgow-3124), not for a descent from this William. - Pennsylvania (1730–1800): Findmypast's indexes show Glasgow taxpayers in Chester County from 1751 (James, Samuel, John, Nathaniel, Margaret and a widow), a 1743 Chester County indictment of a John Glascow, and 1790 census households across the state. None states an Irish origin or names a father, so none can be tied to the Robert c.1710 or James William 1731 Y-DNA lines without other evidence.

Potential-father scoring review — 10 August 2026
John Glasgow (Glasgow-1088) is chronologically capable of fathering William, but the comparison supplies only a 37-year age gap, the broad word “Glasgow” in their Scottish locations, and the common name John among William's descendants. John's documented household moved from Glasgow to Duddingston; William's birthplace is guessed and his Irish migration rests on later family tradition. The match should remain below the actionable threshold unless a specific parish, migration or relationship record joins the two men.

Questions the records have not yet answered, suggested next searches and suggested corrections.
Surname-tradition correction
The literal claim that a Cameron paternal line first adopted Glasgow in 1689 is
rejected by the older shared Glasgow Y-DNA structure. A later confusion between
Cameron and Cameronian is plausible but inferential. DNA does not identify
William, prove military service or supply the missing William-to-John paper link.
