Original testament review - 10 September 2026
All five images of the original NRS Edinburgh Commissary Court CC8/8/70, images 689-693, were visually inspected. The maintained profile associates this testament with Archibald; the testament itself does not independently bridge the maltman to the shoemaker of the 1647 retour. Preserve that distinction when assessing the wider identity evidence.
The opening on image 689 reads Archibald Glasgow maltman Indweller In leith
and says he died in the moneth of ffebry last bypast 1662. The marginal
confirmation date is 24 May 1662. The will's closing date on image 692 is
January 1662, provisionally [xxiij?] day of Jan[uar] 1662; the precise day
remains uncertain. These are death, will and confirmation events, not birth or
marriage dates.
On image 691 the will calls Archibald, George and William Glasgow my lawfull sones and appoints them executors. Agnes Watson is explicitly his
relict spouse in the opening and his spouse/tutor in the will. Thus sonship and
spousal status are direct readings, not deductions from executor roles.
Image 692 names Captain George Cock and Thomas Glasgow, weaver in Edinburgh, as overseers assisting Agnes during the children's minority. Thomas is also named as writer of the will and in the confirmation/caution passage on image 693. William Glasgow, weaver in Leith, appears as a creditor. No securely read clause makes either Glasgow associate a brother or otherwise establishes their relationship to the testator.
The older quotation in research_brief.md is explicitly marked superseded:
its Glasgow residence should read Leith; its May will-making date should
read January, day uncertain; and its inventory subject William should read
Archibald. The inventory includes malt, bere, household possessions and
clothing; financial figures and several names remain unresolved.

The four children attached to Archibald and Agnes Watson carry these reported dates, recovered from their public WikiTree biographies (acquisition leads; originals not inspected): Archibald Glasgow-3079, 8 October 1654 (FQMH-M86); John Glasgow-3516, 27 April 1656 (XY75-RRX); George Glasgow-2714, reported baptised at South Leith on 16 May 1658 (FQMH-CXH); William Glasgow-3080, 15 October 1660 (FQMH-DD9). All four biographies name Archibald and Agnes Watson as parents; that does not independently identify their father with the 1618 child or the shoemaker of 1639 and 1647.
John is absent from the three lawful sons named in the 1662 testament (CC8/8/70). That raises a question, not a proved death before 1662: check the 1656 original, burial evidence and the testament's scope before detaching or merging him.
The live biography also cites a marriage of Archbald Glasgow and Margaret Hilstones, South Leith, 14 April 1646, OPR 692/2, 90/310, FR3086.
