How parent leads are calculated

Automated leads use birth surnames—not married surnames—as parental eligibility, role-specific biological age limits, bounded and approximate-date uncertainty, household chronology, specific time-aware localities, mapped distance, tenancy succession, migration destinations and sex-aware Scottish naming positions across generations. People already attached as the subject's parents stay in the identity summary and are excluded from this alternative-candidate list, regardless of relationship confidence. The main calibration uses clues available on disconnected profiles; existing parent and sibling links are retained as comparison context rather than treated as transferable evidence. Common ordered names and grandparent-to-child echoes receive a small non-zero weight, so a John or James match can support several independent criteria without producing a lead alone. Rare names, repeated bearers and bundles across otherwise distinct branches receive substantially more weight according to catalogue frequency. An exact migration place is weighted by its rarity and repetition across both branches; a shared destination country is worth only one point. Extra weight is added only when at least three independent clue types converge: naming, locality, specific migration, household chronology or collateral networks. Sparse profiles retain a clearly labelled chronology-only fallback instead of disappearing. Countries, states, counties and research clusters do not count as a shared locality, and fallback, broad representative or kin-inferred coordinates are excluded from distance scoring. Shared descendant profiles are removed before branch-name comparison. A candidate already recorded as a parent-in-law is excluded. A confident or independently supported parent is treated as settled; uncertain and unassessed attachments remain open to alternative comparison. A different linked parent, an uncle/aunt or grandparent path, and a matching existing child profile prevent an alternative from being classified as a strong direct-parent lead until the underlying tree conflict or duplicate is resolved. Familiar forms such as Bessie are normalised. Surname remains an eligibility filter worth zero points.

Naming customs, shared farms and occupations are circumstantial. Children, spouses and collateral relatives may be missing, and tree-derived family networks are not independent evidence. Scores rank research leads; they do not prove parentage.

Dates are eligibility gates, not merely deductions: chronologically impossible people are excluded. Dates, places, spouses, parent certainty and children's profiles and names are then compared. A high score is a prompt to inspect records, not a merge recommendation.

Glasgow-2981 · updated 2026-08-19

[[Glasgow-2981|James Glasgow]] is directly identified as the fifty-year-old Antrim-born head of household 29 at Ballycregagh in the surviving 1851 Dunaghy census. The return calls John, William James, Mary Jane, Robert, Margaret, Boyde and Andy his children. It records James and [[Hamilton-25516|Peggy Hamilton]] as married in 1848 and identifies Peggy's parents and sisters.

The recorded 1848 marriage means Peggy should not be treated as the proved mother of the children born before it, but it does not make earlier biological maternity impossible. An 1847 Ballymena Workhouse admission group contains Mary Glasgow, married and deserted, with Margaret, Boyd, William James and Mary Jane at Glenleslie. The names and ages correspond closely to four of James's 1851 children. Mary is therefore the strongest identified earlier-wife and mother candidate, although no marriage record or record explicitly naming James as her husband has been found. Until Mary can safely replace Peggy on the children's profiles, Peggy should remain attached but uncertain. Robert, aged eleven months in 1851, was born after James and Peggy's recorded marriage and is probably Peggy's son.

Parentage and cluster placement

Glasgow-2981 · updated 2026-08-19

James's own parents remain unidentified. His Ballycregagh residence borders Ballybogy and Glenleslie and makes him a useful Dunaghy collateral candidate, but it does not prove that he was a son of [[Glasgow-1022|John Glasgow]], [[Glasgow-1367|Robert Glasgow]], either James Glasgow in the 1825 Ballybogy tithe return, or [[Glasgow-3904|Alexander Glasgow]]. Leave both parents blank.

The two existing similar-person leads, [[Glasgow-1702]] and [[Glasgow-1573]], remain separate profiles. No record inspected in this pass establishes a duplicate identity.

  • Add the complete 1851 household and the 1847 workhouse family group.
  • Retain James's marriage to Peggy, using 1848 as the census-reported year.
  • Retain Peggy as uncertain mother of the pre-1848 children unless Mary or

another better-supported replacement can be attached.

  • Change Robert's estimated birth to about 1850.
  • Change Andy's estimated birth to about 1846 and death to before 1851.
  • Change Boyd's death to winter 1847 and Margaret's death to winter 1850.
  • Leave Mary as an unresolved probable first wife until a record naming her husband distinguishes her safely; a HOLD draft records the duplicate audit.

Peggy cannot have been the mother of the children born before 1848. An 1847 Ballymena Workhouse admission group contains Mary Glasgow, married and deserted, with Margaret, Boyd, William James and Mary Jane at Glenleslie. The names and ages correspond closely to four of James's 1851 children. Mary is therefore the strongest identified first-wife and mother candidate, although no marriage record or record explicitly naming James as her husband has been found. Robert, aged eleven months in 1851, was born after James and Peggy's recorded marriage and is probably Peggy's son.
