Coverage, survival & limitations

Irish census survivals and substitutes, 1821–1851

Most 1821, 1831, 1841 and 1851 returns were destroyed in the 1922 fire. Surviving original fragments include Antrim 1851; Belfast one ward 1851; Dublin city heads-of-household index 1851; Fermanagh 1821/1841/1851; Cavan 1821/1841; Cork 1841; Galway 1821; Offaly 1821; Meath 1821; Waterford 1841; and Londonderry/Derry 1831 with 1834 revisions.

The Derry 1831 material includes names of householders and counts by religion and sex, with 1834 revisions. It is not a person-by-person list of every household member. Search transcripts are finding aids; verify the scanned return and record omissions.

Irish census losses, 1861–1891

No individual household returns survive for 1861, 1871, 1881 or 1891: 1861/1871 were destroyed after analysis and 1881/1891 were pulped during the First World War.

Irish census household returns, 1901 and 1911

These are the only complete surviving pre-Independence Irish census records; original household returns survive across all 32 counties and are searchable with images. A project sample remains a local count, not a national count.

Irish Free State census, 1926

The 1926 Irish Free State census is now available through the National Archives of Ireland. It covers the Free State, not all 32 counties. The 1901/1911 search form is separate from the 1926 service; follow the official 1926 link. This project has not yet collected references from that release.

Reading the evidence: an index, transcript, provider search page and original image are different sources. A recorded image link does not mean its reading or identity match is confirmed. Inspect the assessment and source page before changing a family relationship. Repository guides checked 4 October 2026.

People in the collected census references

212 reference items · 317 linked catalogue people. Several citations may describe the same household; one return can name several people. Linked people include spouses and relatives and are not a verified count of Glasgow surname entries. This is our collected evidence, not a complete surname search of the surviving census.

201 references have a supported census year; 11 remain unresolved. Years come from the enumeration title or original census URL; access dates, birth years and archive numbers are excluded. Countries identify the census jurisdiction where stated, rather than a person’s birthplace.

Collected references 212

Reference items in this project, not the total surviving archive. A reference can appear in several types or locations; several references can concern the same record. Countries are inferred from source descriptions and recorded places, so check the citation. Undated and ambiguous items remain available.
